IRS Forms and the FAFSA: Which Forms Do I Need for the 2024-25 FAFSA?

Information Requested by the FAFSA

The FAFSA asks contributors (the student and student spouse or parent(s) if applicable) to enter the following information from their IRS Form 1040 (the federal tax return):

  1. the contributor’s filing status (checked near the top of Form 1040, page 1);

  2. the amounts from specific numbered lines on the contributor’s Form 1040 and Schedules 1, 2, 3, and C; and

  3. if Schedules A, B, D, E, F, or H were filed with the Form 1040.

2022 IRS Form 1040 (U.S. Individual Income Tax Return)

The federal income tax return form is used by individuals to report income and calculate taxes owed to the federal government or refunds owed to the taxpayer.

Form 1040 may include supplementary forms called Schedules that provide more detailed information. Not all taxpayers will need all Schedules, but many will have at least one or two.

Look for 1040 in the top left corner of the first page and 2022 in the top center of the first page.

Schedules 1, 2, 3, & C (Form 1040)

  • Schedule 1, Additional Income and Adjustments to Income: Used to report additional income (unemployment compensation, prize or award money, etc) or deductions to claim (student loan interest deduction, self-employment tax, educator expenses, etc).

  • Schedule 2, Additional Taxes: Used to report other taxes (self-employment tax).

  • Schedule 3, Additional Credits and Payments: Used to claim any credit that not claimed on Form 1040 or 1040-SR (such as education credits, or general business credits).

  • Schedule C, Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship): Used to report income or loss from a business you operated or a profession you practiced as a sole proprietor. 

Look for the Schedule 1, 2, 3, or C (Form 1040) in the top left corner of the first page and 2022 in the top right corner of the first page.
